Breed

This breed is originally from Switzerland. One of the
4 breeds of a swiss mountain dog. All of these dogs have the same
markings and colorings, the Bernese Mountain dog is however, the only
one with long hair. They were bred to pull milk carts and to herd
cattle. Now that we have the calves it is fun to watch the dogs with
them! The adult weight of these dogs for a male is between 85 - 110.
And the females will grow to be about 70 - 85 lbs.
We take our dogs camping, canoeing, fishing, swimming, hiking, for
drives, for visits. We include them in everything we possible can
that we do. They are a very social dog and require being in a social
stucture and part of a family. They would die being isolated or left
alone chained to a dog coup. Not just my dogs but the entire breed.
People must know what a commitment they are making, because to try
to give away a Berner after 2 years of age or so can be fatal to the
dog. They are one family (then usually one owner within that family)
kind of dogs.
They are not aggressive, and do not like a lot of yelling. It bothers
them. They are very easily trained, I have trained them with voice
and hand commandments usually in just one 15 minute sitting.
In Florida, we were working with a group called Okada Specialty Guide
dogs. Kalob was an ambassador dog for them. They trained dogs for
people who were deaf or had seizures or alzheimers. The best part
about them is that they give both the people and the animals second
chances. All the animals they used in their program came from animal
shelters. |

We also do therapy work visiting nursing homes and
the elderly. So far I've taken only Kalob to do this because my
girls are still young and spirited especially for older people who
may not feel that an 80 lb dog should be a lap dog!
I have taken special care in selecting all of my dogs. I have concentrated
on their ancestry first and formost, so as to avoid any genetic
problems whenever possible. And also on their personalities, bone
structure, and sound temperment. I want these dogs to be able to
perform the jobs for which they were originally bred so I have made
sure they follow the standard as closely as possible.
We have gone to Europe to choose our females from top European Champion
bloodlines in order to produce only quality puppies full of character
and beauty. We feel an expansion of the gene pool can only be an
extra guarantee for beautiful healthy puppies.
We are very choosey about whom we will sell a dog to. The dog must
live inside only and be in a good home full of love for him/her.
I am not unapproachable or demanding... I want only to place my
dogs with good people who will love them and give them terrific,
caring, forever homes. |
